Swiggy Instamart – Guaranteed Top Slots for Generic Search Queries

Quick commerce search advertising is becoming increasingly competitive, and Instamart is taking another step in that direction with the launch of Guaranteed Top Slot (GTS) Ads for generic queries.

Until now, GTS has primarily been useful for brands looking to dominate their own branded searches. With this new rollout, select brands can now reserve the #1 position on high-intent generic search terms.

What’s changing?

The new GTS offering comes with a few important features:

1. Guaranteed Top Slot
Brands can secure the top search position for selected generic queries, helping them capture users who are actively searching within a category.

2. Fixed CPM Pricing
Instead of managing bids every day, brands get a fixed CPM. This makes the media cost more predictable and reduces the need for continuous bid optimisation.

3. Limited Inventory
Brands can reserve generic top slots for a maximum of 7 days per month. Inventory for the upcoming month opens on the 20th of every month and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

4. One Unified Campaign Flow
Instamart is also bringing branded and generic GTS campaigns into a single-page creation experience, making campaign setup simpler.

Why is this important?

The bigger opportunity here isn’t simply getting the #1 position.
It is about owning category-level demand.
For example, a brand that traditionally focuses on searches such as “Brand X detergent” can now potentially target searches such as:

  • Detergent
  • Liquid detergent
  • Detergent powder
  • Best detergent

These searches can bring users who haven’t necessarily decided which brand they want to purchase yet.
That makes generic GTS potentially more interesting for new customer acquisition and competitor conquesting, rather than just brand defense.

But there is an important catch

Once the campaign goes live, it cannot be paused and the product lineup cannot be reduced.
This makes planning extremely important.
Brands need to ensure that the selected SKUs have sufficient inventory and that the expected demand can be fulfilled throughout the booked period.

What should brands evaluate before booking?

I would look at more than just search volume.

The decision should ideally consider:

Search Volume → Organic Rank → CTR → CVR → Competitor Presence → CPM → Incremental GMV

The most important metric will ultimately be incremental business generated versus the fixed media cost.
A high-volume generic keyword may look attractive, but if conversion is weak or the CPM is too high, owning the #1 position may not necessarily translate into profitable growth.

My take

This is an interesting development for quick commerce retail media. GTS for branded searches helps brands protect existing demand.

GTS for generic searches can potentially help brands compete for demand before the consumer has made a brand decision.

The real test will be whether brands can convert that guaranteed visibility into incremental customers and profitable GMV.
With limited inventory and first-come-first-served booking, brands should start identifying their priority generic keywords well before the booking window opens.
